2244 Park Avenue was built in 1876 by Joseph A. Williams, a wood engraver. The architect is unknown at this time. Joseph and his wife Josephine purchased the land in 1869 from Calvin and Nancy Starbuck, who had subdivided and platted the block (then Hathaway Lane) in 1866.
In 1894, one year after J.J. Gordon's purchase of the home, architect Paul C. Pape drafted what the Cincinnati Commercial Tribune called "plans and specifications for an addition to be erected to the handsome brick residence . . . at the cost of $1,100." The following week, the Cincinnati Commercial Gazette said that Gordon was "intending to make a still further improvement in the form of a tower addition, which will give the place quite a distinguished appearance."
