Description
Built as part of Lane Seminary (founded, 1834), the house was the residence of Lyman Beecher, first president of the seminary and father of Harriet. Calvin Stowe, a professor at the seminary, married Harriet in 1836, and the couple lived near to Beecher’s house until moving east in 1850. Many of the stories in Uncle Tom’s Cabin were based on Harriet’s experiences while she lived in Cincinnati.

Eventually, the building became a boarding house. In the 1930’s it was known as the Edgemont Inn and was listed in the Green Book. In the 1940’s, it was saved by Cincinnati’s Black community and is now a museum, in the process of extensive renovation to preserve and display the rich history of the building.
