Built in 1906 on the fashionable southern end of Park Avenue, the apartments provided wealthy Cincinnatians relief from the heat and stench of downtown living. The complex was designed by Joseph Steinkemp for the Emery family business. Its elegant apartments had servant’s quarters on the 4th floor, 12-foot ceilings, veranda-like porches, marble stairwells and a fountain in the courtyard. Apartment buildings like this (e.g., Alexandra) were part of the street-car suburb movement, which allowed people to live in “burbs” like Walnut Hills but work in the city.
Rehabbed into condos in 2009, the Verona remains one of Walnut Hills’ architectural gems.
