Thatcher’s was a household word for many Cincinnatians and for Blacks as far away as Dayton. Started in 1933, the store remained in the hands of the Thatcher family until it closed in the late 1980s. It was well known for fresh meat, poultry and fish.
Ernest and Georgia Thatcher came to Cincinnati in 1929 hoping to make a better life for themselves in the big city. Their hard work at a location in the heart of Cincinnati’s Black community paid off for more than half a century. When MLK was completed, the shopping district at Gilbert/Lincoln declined. Thatcher’s is still missed by many who remember shopping at the store, and members of the Thatcher family remain in Walnut Hills.
