When Sears & Roebuck expanded from strictly mail-order to retail in 1924, it built stores that were “state of the art” in the newly automobile-dependent society. Customers from residential areas could park for free and walk to an air-conditioned building. Departments separated male- and female- oriented merchandise, and the layouts were standardized to provide a common experience for the traveler.
Cincinnati’s Sears store on Reading Road opened in 1929 and quickly became a landmark. Its limestone and brick façade dominated the skyline. After WWII suburban malls replaced the shopping experience Sears had pioneered. The Cincinnati store was closed in 1981. After extensive renovation, the building now houses a technology center.
